Debra Johnston’s Modern Home on Ridgewood

June 22, 2009
Debra Johnston, REALTOR

Many people think of homes in Buckhead as large, traditional estates by famous classical architects. While there are many many examples of these beautiful homes, many modern homes can be found in Buckhead as well.

As an 18 year resident of Buckhead and a passionate collector of mid-century furnishings and art, I have seen many modern homes or know of them in Atlanta. I have a large number of modernist clients and friends and the list is growing.

Modern homes and design-centric homes are a passion of mine, and I’m happy to share with you about a home that I currently have listed for sale on Ridgewood. (Please click here to see the property on my web site.)

In 2006, the current homeowners did a complete renovation on this ranch and transformed it into walls of glass and high ceilings with skylights.

This home is gated and on an excellent street in Buckhead, area code 30327 and sits on almost 2 acres with a private pool and tennis court.

The builder, Nigel Ingleton did an outstanding renovation and transformed a basic ranch into a modern jewel. The chef’s kitchen has German cabinetry by Leicht with granite and stainless countertops.

There are soaring ceilings in the living room and in the master bedroom with hardwood floors throughout.

It is private and offered at $1,550,000.

Debra Johnston – Specializing in Modern Architecture in Atlanta

Sometimes “modern” seems a little too narrow of a category so I also like to think that I specialize in “design centric” properties, where thought and attention has been given to the design details of the residence.  What goes into a modern or design centric homes are things like the position of the home on the building site, the way the house faces to allow the most extraordinary light to fall during each season, kind of windows and doors, materials and surfaces, lighting, and especially architectural details.

I plan to post on the Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty blog regularly about modern design for residential properties in Atlanta.

Today, as I was surveying Amberwood, an Atlanta neighborhood in Dekalb County near Clairmont and Briarcliff, I happened upon a property of significance that has recently come available on the market.

It is a Robert Green designed home built in 1963 with six bedrooms and five full bathrooms. It was lovingly restored by Mike Connor and Jeff Doud, and has recently been featured in Metropolitan Home.  I took some snapshots of the exterior, which are seen below (especially the beautiful Japanese Gardens).   If you would like more information about this property, or other modern homes in Atlanta, please contact me at debrajohnston@atlantafinehomes.com or 404.312.1959.
